For Antigua Sailing Week 2014 Lay Day fun is back at Pigeon Beach on Wednesday 30th April. Following on from the night before, the big Shaggy concert sponsored by English Harbour 5 Year Old Rum, it is the perfect day to hit the beach and enjoy some good clean Caribbean fun, rum and competition.
This year’s events start at 1 pm with the Nonsuch Bay RS Elite Challenge. Now in its second year, the Challenge is a one-day invitational one-design racing event featuring 24-foot RS Elite keel boats. Antigua’s luxury sailing resort and sponsor of Antigua Sailing Week, Nonsuch Bay, is the sponsor of this exciting event which saw eight invited teams compete last year in the RS Elites normally based at the Resort.
Eight hot racing teams will compete with some world renowned skippers at the helm including: former America’s Cup sailor Peter Holmberg; Olympic Gold Medalist, World Champion and Gold Cup winner Pol Hoj Jensen; John Burnie, skipper of Bristolian; Al Ashford, XOD Captains’ Cup winner; Robert Date, skipper of RP 52 Scarlet Runner; John Holmberg, CAC Games Laser Bronze Medalist and Prindle 19 National Champion and Antiguan Patmore Watson, winner of many Caribbean Regattas and single-handed races.
It’s an exciting event that spectators love. Racing is held in close proximity to the beach and compere, Puerto Rican sailor Jaime Torres, keeps everyone updated and entertained with what is happening on the water. Racing is done in two preliminary heats of three races each. The two top finishers of each heat go to the final round which also consists of three races. All races are approximately 15 to 20 minutes in length, keeping them challenging and exciting to watch! The skipper of the victorious team will win a fantastic week’s stay on Antigua’s stunning east coast at Nonsuch Bay Resort.
The beach will be full of life with DJ Anya and Island Fm creating a laid back vibe handing over to DJ Tanny just in time for sunset and taking the party into the night. Food vendors will have grills fired up from 1 pm right through the night and sponsor Nonsuch Bay Resort will have star chef Mitchell Husbands delivering gourmet barbecue for those who want a taste of something a little different. Beach games and fire dancing will keep the party going into the night.
For anyone who loves some competition, Antigua Sailing Week is offering a chance for one person to win 3 nights stay for two people at Nonsuch Bay Resort including breakfast and use of the sailboats.
