ST. JOHN’S, Antigua, April 28, 2017 — The National Parks will once again, this year, play host to highly anticipated events on the Antigua Sailing Week party calendar. Massive numbers of visitors, spectators and partygoers are set to travel into the area for the celebrations marking Antigua Sailing Week’s 50th edition. That means heavy traffic is expected for the Falmouth, Cobbs Cross and English Harbour communities.
The Traffic Division of the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda has conducted a series of meetings with event organisers to discuss traffic management throughout the event-week. To ensure a smooth flow of traffic, the general public are asked when arriving into the area to comply with all directions given by the police.
From 4 p.m. today, a one-way traffic system goes in effect for the entire event-week, including for Tuesday’s Reggae in the Park, which is expected to draw impressive crowds.
The police are also advising all licensed firearm holders attending the Tuesday night party to check in their firearm into the most convenient police station.
To relieve traffic congestion, the Antigua Sailing Week Organising Committee and the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda are also encouraging use of the Park-and-Ride service and carpooling.
Two designated Park-and-Ride services will operate on Friday, April 28 and on Tuesday, May 2 free-of-cost. The Park-and-Ride shuttles on these days will operate simultaneously to assist in easing congestion into the Dockyard. Shuttles will remain operational on these days between 5 p.m. to 2 a.m.
Motorists coming from the direction of Horsford Hill will be directed to take the Park-and-Ride service at the Falmouth Rectory Grounds. While, motorists traveling from the Bethesda area will get directed to the Marsh Village Park-and-Ride service.
A new traffic management system will also be introduced for the Dickenson Bay Beach Bash.
The Antigua Sailing Week Organising Committee is also advising all event-goers to drink responsibly, use a designated driver and wear seat belts when driving.
