Protecting Our Ocean Species

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS: MARCH 31

PEOPLES CHOICE FACEBOOK VOTING: APRIL 3 – 6

ART EXHIBITION & AWARDS: APRIL 12

The 2024 Harper’s School Art Competition is dedicated to raising awareness and advocating for the protection of our ocean species around Antigua & Barbuda.  Globally recognized Earth Day’s 2024 theme of “Protect Our Species” attempts to draw attention to the rapid extinction of species around the world directly linked to human activities.

In line with Earth Day’s mission to safeguard the environment, this year’s competition encourages school students to use their artistic talents to shed light on the importance of preserving marine life and habitats. Artwork must revolve around the theme of protecting our ocean species, highlighting their beauty, significance, conservation, or the impact of human activities.

Competition Categories: students can pick one of these directions.

  • Marine Species Portraits: Students can create realistic or imaginative depictions of individual ocean species such as conch, parrot fish, lobster, urchins, sea turtles, dolphins, and sharks, emphasizing their beauty and importance.
  • Underwater Ecosystems: In this category, students are invited to showcase the vibrancy and complexity of underwater and shoreline ecosystems, including coral reefs, mangroves, and seagrass beds, along with the creatures that inhabit them.
  • Ocean Species Advocacy: Students can use their artwork to advocate for the protection of a specific endangered ocean species here in Antigua & Barbuda, urging viewers to take action.
  • Ocean Guardians: In this category, students are invited to create art that celebrates individuals, groups, or initiatives working to protect species – example EAG, Adopt-A-Coastline, Elkhorn. This category focuses on inspiring hope and activism.
