SAILING WEEK MOVES BEACH BASH TO FORT JAMES 10 Feb, 2008
Another page will turn at this year’s Stanford Antigua Sailing Week. For many years now the first day of racing has ending with a beach bash on Dickenson Bay. The traditional beach party attracts thousands of people who join the sailors in the post race revelry from early afternoon until late into the night. However over recent years the logistics of hosting such an event on Dickenson Bay have become increasingly difficult, access to the beach and parking have been major challenges. Further changes in the surrounding environment since last year’s event have obliged the Sailing Week Organising Committee to make the difficult decision to move the Beach party to Fort James for this year’s event. The Committee no longer feels that it can properly organize the event and guarantee the safety of all the participants on the Dickenson Bay Beach.
Tradition aside, the Fort James venue will allow for a better and larger event. The event is still in its early planning stages but already Russell’s has been designated the Official Race Centre and Millers will be hosting a special party event. The popular beach atmosphere will be preserved and the vendors will be given the same opportunity to offer their fare to the visiting sailors. Details of how vendors may apply to participate will be given at a later date by the Ministry of Tourism.
However, the date to remember is April 27th and the venue is Fort James. This year’s Beach bash will be one to remember. Further details will be given nearer the time.
