Over 270 entries received in Antigua Sailing Week / LIAT’s Schools’ Art Competition

09-04-2010 16:45:23

The entries are finally in! Antigua Sailing Week is pleased to announce that over 270 original art pieces from 20 schools across the island have been entered into this year’s LIAT sponsored School’s Art Competition.

Both Antigua Sailing Week and LIAT representatives were enthused by the overwhelming interest and inspired by the creativity that the children displayed. Momentum continues to build as our esteemed panel of judges begins the process of evaluating and choosing this year’s winners. Final winners will be selected on Thursday, April 15th.

This year, the student’s explored the theme, “What does Sailing Week mean to me?” AHTA’s Thaila David co-ordinator of the competition said, “The talent these young people display simply amazes us year after year.  We are honoured to have them use this competition as a platform to showcase their artistry.” The competition provides a fantastic opportunity for students of all ages to express their creativity and competitive spirit as well as being a part of Sailing Week, Antigua’s most recognised sporting event.

Prizes will be awarded to first, second and third place winners in each of the three age categories (5-8, 9-12 and 13-17). First place winners will each receive two LIAT airline tickets to any destination the airline flies. LIAT will also provide model airplanes and goody bags for the competition participants. Supplemental prizes were also kindly donated by Jolly Beach, Diamonds International, Trade Winds Hotel, Wadadli Cats and Zemi Art Gallery to name a few.

An exhibition of the artwork will be on display at Admiral’s Inn from April 24th –April 30th and is open to the public. The prizes will be presented during the Dockyard Day festivities on May 1st at 2 pm.

Further information on the competition and a gallery of artwork can be found online at: http://www.sailingweek.com/v2/gallery.php?gallery=55
